Video Game Addictions

March 15, 2010 - Video games have become a popular form of entertainment in today’s society.  Many people play games casually, while others play them very often.  It is this group that faces the problem of video game addictions.

An addiction to video games occurs when somebody completely isolates themselves from the rest of the world, and focuses on nothing but the game itself.  An addiction can occur with any type of game, but most cases are with Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG’s), such as World of Warcraft.  The object of World of Warcraft is to go on quests, and fight enemies, in order to enhance your character.  It takes quite a while to level up your character, and many people find it very addicting.

Many of these people could play games for long periods of time with very few breaks in between.  This could lead to many health problems, as well as mental ones.  Many countries, including China and the U.S., have taken preventive measures against this.  Both countries have created clinics that help treat the addictions, and many addiction centers have opened their doors to people with video game addictions.

Many people, such as myself, play games but do not come addicted.  The best way to prevent becoming addicted to video games is to take a break.  I can’t play a game for extended periods without at least a twenty minute break, and it really seems to help.

Video games are very fun, and they are a great way to pass the time, but they can become very addicting if you let them.  The best thing to do is to take breaks regularly and if you feel like you are becoming addicted, stop playing and seek help.  Don’t let the games you play, play you.
