USD 257 DISTRICT INFORMATION

The Central Office for the Superintendent, Support Services and the Clerk of the Board is located at 408 N. Cottonwood, Iola, KS 66749. Office hours during the regular school term are 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. During the months of June and July, office hours are 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Iola Register is the official newspaper for publication of school district information.

The district welcomes patrons to visit the school system and to visit classes, but would request that anyone visiting the school check in with the building principal.

Closing of School Due to Inclement Weather

The first concern of all employees of USD #257 is the safety of the students. Weather in Kansas sometimes makes it impossible to have school on a scheduled day. During periods of inclement weather, patrons may tune to KIKS 99.3 FM or KKOY 105.5 FM radio stations or KOAM - TV channel7.

Emergency Planning Procedures

An emergency plan has been developed for each attendance center. This plan may differ from school to school however, the basic regulations and procedures apply to everyone.

1. Fire - Each attendance center will follow the regulations of the State Fire Marshall and hold monthly drills.

2. Tornado - Tornado safety drills will be held in each building and directions for safety procedures will be given by the building principals.

3. Telephone - Parents are asked not to telephone the school during severe weather conditions. The safety of the students may depend upon telephone lines being kept open to transmit warnings and directions to school by Civil Defense and school officials.

4. School Dismissal - As a general rule, school will not be dismissed early. In instances where tornado warnings are in effect for the immediate area at the time of regular dismissal, students will be held until the severe weather warnings for the area is lifted.
